The total fertility rate for 2024 was 1.25 in Finland, which is the lowest birth rate since statistics compilation started in the year 1776, according to Statistics Finland.
A total of 43,720 children were born in 2024. The total fertility rate was lowest in Kymenlaakso (1.06), North Karelia (1.11) and South Karelia (1.14).
The birth rate was highest in Central Ostrobothnia (1.72), Ostrobothnia (1.48) and North Ostrobothnia (1.47).
The total fertility rate for 2021 to 2024 was highest in the municipalities of Luoto (3.64), Pyhäntä (3.52), Merijärvi (2.81) and Tyrnävä (2.77).
Among municipalities with over 20,000 population, the total fertility rate was lowest in Joensuu (1.04), Turku (1.06), Tampere (1.06) and Savonlinna (1.08) in 2021 to 2024.
In all, 18 per cent of children born in 2024 were born to foreign-language speaking mothers.
In all, 85 per cent of men having had children were aged under 40 and 99 per cent were aged under 50 in 2020 to 2024.
