The University of Tampere decided to suspend all the scheduled classes and examinations on Wednesday due to strike called by employee unions.
The day-long strike is related to the ongoing collective agreement negotiations for universities, said the university in a press release, adding that it hopes for a swift resolution to the negotiations.
Sivista ry, which represents university employers, and the employee unions JUKO ry, Pro ry and JHL ry have been negotiating the general collective agreement for universities since the beginning of February.
The collective agreement negotiations apply to all 13 Universities in Finland. The employee unions suspended the negotiations on 22 April 2025 and issued a strike warning for 7 May at one university, which is Tampere University.
The unions called the strike to speed up collective agreement negotiations.
The collective labor agreement dispute has been mediated since Thursday, 24 April, under the leadership of the National Conciliator.
Unfortunately, the negotiating parties – Sivista and the trade unions JUKO ry, Pro ry, and JHL ry – have not reached a settlement as a result the pre-announced strike will be observed at Tampere University on Wednesday.
Scheduled classes and examinations will remain suspended and student services and library service will remain closed due to the strike.
The Teacher Training School will suspend teaching in grades 1–9 of basic education during the strike.
The University's campuses will be open as usual and the Strike does not concern the University's facility and property service providers Tampere University of Applied Sciences and its subcontractors. Restaurants will remain open.
