EU targets full Russian gas exit by end of 2027

The European Commission on Tuesday unveiled a new roadmap to end the European Union's (EU) reliance on Russian gas by 2027, reported Xinhua.

The REPowerEU Roadmap sets out a phased and coordinated plan to halt imports of Russian natural gas, oil, and nuclear materials across the 27-member bloc, according to a press release by the Commission.

Under the proposal, the EU would immediately stop signing new contracts for Russian gas and terminate all existing spot market deals by the end of 2025. All remaining Russian gas imports would cease by the end of 2027.

EU member states will be required to submit national plans by year-end, detailing how they intend to phase out Russian energy imports in line with the Commission's targets.

The Commission added that it will present legislative proposals next month to support the implementation of the roadmap.

According to Commission data, the EU imported 52 billion cubic meters (bcm) of Russian gas in 2024, alongside 13 million tonnes of crude oil and over 2,800 tonnes of equivalent uranium in enriched or fuel form.
