Electricity production was resumed at Olkiluoto 3 (OL3) nuclear power plant on Tuesday, said the owner of the plant Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) in a press release.
The completed annual outage was the second one at OL3 and the next annual outage of the plant will not take place until in September 2026.
As the largest nuclear power plant unit in Europe, about 2,000 different work activities and about 6,000 work phases were carried out during OL3’s service outage.
Apart from refueling, the most important works carried out included the containment leak-tightness test, work on reactor coolant system pumps, washing and inspection of steam generators, and warranty work conducted by the plant supplier.
In addition to TVO's own personnel, this year about 1,000 employees of subcontractors took part in the annual outage works, about half of them arriving from abroad.
The annual outage, however, did not take as long as originally planned. The outage was scheduled to take 63 days and continue until 2 May. The actual duration was 59 days and 13 hours.
The OL3 nuclear power plant unit remained disconnected from electricity production from March 1 due to the service outage.
Electricity production at the Olkiluoto 2 plant unit (OL2) remained suspended from April 15, due to increased moisture detected in the turbine island’s generator.
The Olkiluoto 2 (OL2) nuclear power plant unit is expected to resume electricity production on May 10.
The refueling outage at OL1 will start on 11 May and will take about 11 days.
The service outage of OL2 will start on 25 May and will take 21 days, ending on 15 June.
