Finland started its Ice Hockey 2025 world championship journey with a victory against Austria at Avicii Arena in Stockholm, Sweden on Friday.
The Lions won the tough match by two goals to one as the Austrians, who beat Finland for the first time in the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship history last year again showed their courageous performance against the former world champions.
Patrik Puistola scored the first goal at the 5th minute of the game and lead took lead for Finland and Juuso Parssinen widened the gap at the 8th minute.
But Austria tried to comeback and Bernd Wolf scored the solitary goal for the team at the 14th minute of the first period.
Both the team, however, failed to score any goal in the last two periods of the match despite getting several chances.
Marco Kasper of Austria got some great chances and also sent the puck to the net but the referee cancelled the goal following the Finnish Coach´s challenge.
One of the attractions of the match was Tolvanen brothers who played against each other in the match.
Atte Tolvanen who played as the goalkeeper for Austria after taking nationality of the country saved a shot from his brother Eeli Tolvanen at the third period.
The Lions will play against France in their second match on Sunday.
