Transport in foreign shipping traffic drops by 1.5% in Finland in 2024

The total volume of foreign sea transport was 86.0 million tonnes in 2024, according to Statistics Finland.

The volume of transport decreased by 1.5 per cent compared to 2023. Exports decreased by 3.7 per cent and amounted to 40.7 million tonnes.

Imports, however, remained on level with the previous year and amounted to 45.3 million tonnes.

Measured by the volume of goods transported, the largest ports in 2024 were, in order, Sköldvik, Helsinki, HaminaKotka, Raahe and Rauma.

General cargo, oil products and crude oil were transported most in foreign shipping traffic.

Altogether 90 per cent of goods imported in foreign shipping traffic were imported from European ports and 84 per cent of exports were headed to European ports.

In foreign sea transport, 13.5 million passengers passed through Finnish ports in 2024, which is roughly the same as in 2023.

In all, 69 per cent of goods imported in foreign shipping traffic came from ports in the Baltic Sea area and only 10 per cent from other than European ports.

Altogether 56 per cent of export goods were exported to ports in the Baltic Sea area and 16 per cent were exported outside European ports.

Combining imports and exports, most sea transport took place between Finland and Sweden in 2024, totalling 13.4 million tonnes.

Most goods were imported from Norway, 9.2 million tonnes and most were exported to Germany, 8.0 million tonnes.

The volumes transported between Finland and Russia, which have decreased since 2022 as a result of the Russian war of aggression, remained low in 2024 as well.

The volume of Russian transport totalled 0.2 million tonnes, which is only two per cent of the volume of transport in 2021.
