Dozens have been injured, 19 of them seriously, in connection with SV Hamburg's Bundesliga promotion celebrations, the local fire brigade has said.
Fans had invaded the pitch after the final whistle of Hamburg's 6-1 victory over Ulm which secured the return to the top flight after seven years in the second division.
The fire brigade spoke of 44 injured overall, of which one was taken to hospital in a life threatening condition in connection with an illness. The Hamburg club said on Sunday this case was not in connection with the pitch invasion.
Hamburg said that most injuries occurred when fans jumped from the stands into the infield.
"Considering the overall situation and the pitch invasion we have a manageable number of injuries," event manager Jan Groninger said in the statement.
"The good cooperation between the security forces and the many level-headed fans ultimately ensured that things calmed down quickly after the storming of the pitch. We wish the injured a speedy and speedy recovery"
A few minutes before the end of the game, first fans entered the infield. When the final whistle blew, there was no holding them back. Police prevented jubilant fans from entering the dressing room area.
