Latvia's births in the first quarter of 2025 decreased by 12.6 percent year-on-year, the national statistical office said Tuesday, reported Xinhua.
The number of babies born in the January-March period dropped to 2,756 this year from 3,154 in the first quarter of 2024.
In March, however, the number of births increased to 985 compared to January and February when Latvia recorded 881 and 890 births, respectively.
The natural population change in the first quarter of 2025 remained negative, at minus 4,114.
According to data recorded at the beginning of April, the size of Latvia's population had decreased by 15,300 people to around 1.847 million people.
Earlier this month, President Edgars Rinkevics said in an interview to public televisions that in order to prevent the plummeting birth rate from further damaging Latvia's growth, the key solutions should include raising childcare benefits, improving access to high-quality healthcare and providing affordable housing to young families.
