A German police officer is suspected of having used his service weapon to shot and kill his former partner before killing himself, police said on Thursday, reported dpa.
Neighbours heard shots ringing out from an apartment building in the southern town of Lahr near the French border on Wednesday evening and alerted the police. Officers found two bodies as well as a gun "in the immediate vicinity" of the man's body.
In a press release on Thursday, police said initial investigations by forensic experts from the crime scene suggest that the 30-year-old officer first shot dead the 37-year-old woman before shooting himself.
Criminal police are still determining the exact course of events, it said.
Witness statements suggest that the man and the women, a married couple who were living separately, had gotten into an argument on Wednesday before the shots were fired.
The man is said to have worked as an officer for the police department in the nearby city of Freiburg.
"According to the current state of the investigation, the handgun was the man's service weapon," the statement said. The gun was seized at the crime scene.
