The Parliament on Tuesday brought amendments to the Basic Education Act with the provision for restricting the use of mobile phone by the primary and secondary students in schools, said the parliament in a press release.
The new law will come into effect from August 1, 2025.
The law prohibited use of phones and other mobile devices during the school hours.
The use of mobile devices, however, could be allowed with permission from the teacher under special circumstances such as for study and health-related purposes.
The teachers will also decide about using mobile phone in other times such as breaks and lunch during the school hours.
The law entitled the school authority to seize mobile devices from the students, if they disrupt study in the classroom.
The law also kept a provision for conducting a study by the Ministry of Education and Culture on the effects of restrictions on the use of mobile devices by the end of 2026 and further measures could be taken based on the study, if necessary.
