A cultural tapestry of Malaysian heritage in Helsinki

The Embassy of Malaysia in Helsinki held an exhibition at the embassy premises recently focusing the artistic heritage of the country through the lens of its diaspora.

The exhibition entitled “Batik & Manik Art Exhibition,” an evocative cultural initiative presented by the Project Synergy was held under the overarching theme of Roots, Identity, and Preservation of Art, Culture & Heritage on May 8, said the embassy in a press release on Tuesday.

The exhibition is a vibrant showcase of traditional Malaysian batik and beadwork (manik), reimagined through the unique expressions of two Malaysian artists- Ouddhena Erognica Teern and Serena Chan- residing in Finland.

This exhibition highlighted the project Synergy, a flagship community engagement effort initiated by the Malaysian Embassy in Helsinki.

Rooted in the values of Malaysia MADANI—a framework of progressive governance emphasising compassion, inclusivity, and sustainability—the project strives to strengthen cultural identity, encourage active community participation, and promote Malaysian talent on the global stage.

In his opening remarks, Mohamed Ariff Mohamed Ali, Charge d’ affaires of the Malaysian Embassy to Finland reflected on the emotional significance of this initiative.

"When we leave our home countries to build a life abroad, we often reach for art and culture to stay connected to the families, friends, and stories we leave behind. Art becomes a bridge—a tangible tether to our identity and roots. That is why today’s exhibition is not just a display of artistry, but a celebration of who we are as Malaysians, wherever we may be. It is with this hope that today marks an exciting beginning for the artist—and a gateway of possibilities for all Malaysian talents in this region,” said the envoy.

Project Synergy has already made an inspiring start in 2024 with two initiatives: the Friends of Malaysia (FoM) Art Exhibition, featuring amateur artist Chinda Nang, and the screening of KITA, a heart-warming Malaysian film showcasing everyday stories of unity and resilience, curated by Melody Lee.

This year's Batik & Manik Art Exhibition deepens that vision. Through vivid textiles and intricate beadwork, Ouddhena and Serena invite visitors to experience the soul of Malaysia—rich with symbolism, tradition, and personal narratives.

Their works are more than decorative; they are stories woven in colour, heritage made tangible, and identity stitched with pride.

Beyond its cultural display, the exhibition underscored the Embassy’s broader commitment to Cultural Diplomacy, using the arts as a bridge to promote mutual understanding, goodwill, and cooperation between Malaysia and Finland.
