President leaves Helsinki for Kenya, Tanzania on 5-day visits

President Alexander Stubb and First Lady Suzanne Innes-Stubb on Sunday left Helsinki for Nairobi on an official visit to Kenya, according to the President Office.

The visit will take place on 12–14 May 2025 to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations between Finland and Kenya.

His visit will begin in Nairobi on Monday with a meeting with his Kenyan counterpart William Ruto.

The discussions between the Presidents will focus on the bilateral relations between Finland and Kenya, global challenges and their impact in Africa and Europe, and cooperation in support of the multilateral system.

The talks will be followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at Uhuru Gardens.

During his stay, Stubb will meet representatives of local NGOs and foreign policy experts. The main topics of discussion will be regional dynamics and social development.

The President will visit the University of Nairobi, where he will give a speech on geopolitics and the transformation of the multilateral order, followed by a discussion with students.

In addition, he will attend the closing event of the EU-Kenya Business Forum, where he will deliver a keynote speech.

President Stubb will also meet with the Director-General of the UN Office in Nairobi, UNON, and the Executive Directors of UNEP and UN-Habitat.

The visit of Stubb is the first presidential visit from Finland to Kenya.

After Kenya visit the President and the First Lady will pay a state visit to the United Republic of Tanzania on 14–16 May.

The state visit will celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations between Finland and Tanzania.

Stubb will meet President of Tanzania Samia Suluhu Hassan in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday.

The Presidents will discuss bilateral relations between Finland and Tanzania, geopolitical changes, global challenges and their impact on African countries and Europe.

Stubb will be one of the keynote speakers at the Martti Ahtisaari Legacy Seminar, organised by the CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, the Embassy of Finland in Tanzania and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation of Tanzania.

During the visit, Stubb will participate in the UNDP Innovation Week conference and Business Finland’s seminar focusing on health and the built environment, where he will deliver remarks.

The President will also visit the Botanical Gardens of Dar es Salaam for the launch of the Finnish-Tanzanian project Forestry, Land Use and Value Chains Development.

The programme also includes an introduction to a UN Women project, which promotes the status and economic rights of women in Tanzania, and a visit to the National Museum of Tanzania.

The previous presidential visit from Finland to Tanzania was made by President Tarja Halonen in 2003.
